Week 6: This Is Just A Test
I am half-way through my residency here at Recess Labs and Grand Central Tech. So I hear the Emergency Broadcast Signal every morning in my head now. Even though I know this business is already 100% more on track than it used to be, I can’t help but think of all that’s left to do and the dread of when my time here is up.
Whoa, it just got existential in here.
“When you’re young you have time and energy, but no money. When you get older you have money and energy, but no time. And later when you finally have time and money, you no longer have energy.”
Timing is both everything and elusive. I met up with an old business school classmate after I left my last job. I’m not sure why I thought to reach out to him except maybe to re-immerse myself into the venture community where he has made a name for himself. I had the idea for a mentoring platform, but didn’t know where to start.
He wasn’t interested. And then the kicker, “You know, I thought you would be a corporate lifer.”
I laughed it off, but was secretly insulted. It’s also when I knew I made the right choice. Right or wrong, I am energized when I have something to prove. Even though I had burned over a decade of my life working for other people, I had learned something. And I have something to say.
A common exercise among coaching circles is to write your obituary. It’s such a powerful exercise because it clarifies our deepest desires on paper and reminds us that we’re not dead yet.
There’s still time.
Coincidentally, I have wrapped up my user interviews and selected a small group of users to test out a revised service. It should last about four weeks. By the end, I will have two weeks left at Recess Labs. Enough time to polish and (hopefully) relaunch in a bigger way.
There’s still time.
When this residency ends, I want to be in position to raise a seed round of funding to take Edittress to the next level. There I said it.
“If this had been an actual emergency, the Attention Signal you just heard would have been followed by official information, news, or instructions.”
There’s still time!
